Alberta Railway Museum
Ride aboard a centuries-year-old steam engine and explore dozens of trains parts, including an unusual "comboose."
Since the 1970s, the Alberta Pioneer Railway Association has been gathering and preserving a growing railway collection at the Alberta Railway Museum. In 1976, they opened their doors, and have been delighting locomotive fans ever since.
The museum includes more than 75 locomotives, passenger and freight cars, track maintenance and industrial equipment, and buildings from across Northern Alberta. The museum has also constructed a replica terminal station and water tank.
At the entrance sits a snowplow engine that was used to clear the train tracks after a heavy snowfall. Also included in the collection is an unusual piece: a “comboose” (a passenger coach/caboose) from 1899.
Visitors are free to walk around the grounds to board and explore trains in various states of renovation. The passenger cars for travel are especially popular and are a favorite haunt for wedding photos. Volunteers at the park also give rides on a small steam engine for visitors, making it a wonderful excursion for children. If you’re a cat lover, the outdoor museum is also home to a group of friendly farm cats who love attention.
