Eden Camp is best known for being the only modern history theme museum. The building itself is an artifact. In 1942, a small group of British army personnel were given the task of creating a temporary POW camp for the heavy influx of prisoners of war. That same year, 250 Italian prisoners of war became the first inmates and were forced to build a permanent camp.
The Eden Camp museum is that very camp. It’s not a replica. The huts on the site have been designed to each tell a different aspect of the World War II history, starting with Hitler and the rise of the Nazi party. Other huts cover everything from family life, propaganda, weaponry, war at sea, and women at war.
Each hut transports its visitors back in time to a specific location up until 1945. Perhaps the most exciting part of the museum is that not only does it recreate World War II life, but it uses authentic smells and sounds to put your trip into context.
