On the edge of the village of Varel, a 50.5-meter-tall landmark towers far above the surrounding forests and houses. This water tower was finished in 1914 and still supplies its village with drinking water to this day. Every day, the tower is open to visitors who can enjoy the view from the top.

Along the ascent, you can view a small exhibition about the tower’s history, function, and relationship with the surrounding community. A spiral staircase through the tower’s reservoir leads to the viewing platform, which provides a marvelous view of the German countryside.

Know Before You Go

The tower is usually not staffed, and can be entered by dropping a €0.50 coin in the door's locking mechanism.
